RAID 1+0 is the Cadillac of RAID | Storage Bits | ZDNet.com
" What is RAID 1+0? Sometimes shortened to RAID 10, RAID 1+0 is a particular combination of two different RAID levels: mirroring (RAID 1) and striping (RAID 0). The appeal of RAID 1+0 is simple: mirroring gives you the highest level of availability RAID offers, with the fastest rebuild times when a disk fails; while striping - using the proper chunk size - is the basis for high-performance I/O. . Put the two together and you have the best of both worlds. Until George showed up with his facts. . What about the poor performance George found? We re coming to that, but first a word from our sponsor. . There is an important difference between RAID 1+0 and RAID 0+1 that not everyone appreciates. In RAI" [1]

" The group, which premiered this week partly in commemoration of a raid 10 years ago that broke up a major sweatshop ring in Southern California, plans to work with the U.S. Department of Labor and other state and local agencies to conduct sweeps. On Aug. 2, 1995, state and federal agents found more than 70 Thai immigrants working in slavelike conditions in an El Monte (Los Angeles County) house. They worked 16-hour days seven days a week and lived 10 or more to a room, with no air conditioning. "That case really shed light and brought focus to the problem," Fryer said. "Ten years later, we've come to see how things have changed, what problems remain." The coalition dispatched three teams throughout the Bay Area th" [3]

" We have four file servers, each hosting around 3.5TB on SATA drives connected to 3Ware RAID controller cards configured on RAID 10 array. These file servers are exporting the drives through NFS. Each file server is running 265 daemons for nfsd. The file servers are mainly hosting large number of small files ranging from 256KB to 2 MB. The compute nodes are primarily doing a search through these files, so there is lot's of reading and some writing to the file servers. Recently we started noticing very high (70-90%) wait states on the file servers when compute nodes. We have tried to optimize the NFS through increasing the number of daemons and the rsize and wsize but to no avail. " [5]

" Both NASes are otherwise pretty much identical, with two USB 2.0 ports to accomodate some external hard drives (in case 3TB isn't enough for ya), four hard drives on the inside, and support for RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10 configurations. Each device is also identical when it comes to price, with both available now for $2,499 apiece.[Via SmallNetBuilder]. . Yeah, we've caught glimpses of the OLPC in action, but we've yet to see a group of school children get so hyped about receiving an educational tool like the 160 youngsters in Villa Cardal recently did. The relatively small Uruguayan town was thrown into a mild frenzy as a batch of shiny green and white OLPC XOs showed up to give the impressionable kiddos a taste of how learning should really be done. " I have the following setup: cheap webservers (LVS) cheap load balancers (VIP) expensive raid 10 mysql server (master) cheap fileserver + mysql slave (just for backup, not for queries) . Granted, if your database server dies, you're screwed, but with the current mysql master/slave/replication/cluster technologies you wouldn't be able to provide failover for update/insert/delete query's anyway. making one of the slaves into a master and thus change its database will give you a serious problem when you master comes back up again. You'd have to make the master a slave, stop the current master (breaking the whole point of allways online) and replicate to it, then when it is up2date change its role to be master again. .
