Digg - VelociRaptors In RAID 5, A Case Study In Speed
" The most useful application of drives like this are in ultra-demanding server RAID-5 systems, and that kills off that entire arena.Just watch: the relabeled "server" version will have the industry-standard connectors on it, wait and see. Talk about a sneaky way to sock business customers for some extra dough. vault, on 06/28/2008, -0/+7 Well if it were truly demanding you'd probably use scsi to begin with. I see raptors as being mostly for gamers, a/v workstations, enthusiast/power users, etc. They probably will come out with a new version though...I was reading a while ago transintl is coming out with a bracket to work around this anyway. KibibyteBrain, on 06/28/2008, -1/+7 Enterprise with their money would opt for more, more reliable server grade drives in RAID 10 for a per" [1]

RAID - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
" For example, one could have a very robust RAID-1 partition for important files, and a less robust RAID-5 or RAID-0 partition for less important data. (Some high-end hardware controllers offer similar features, e.g. Intel Matrix RAID.) Using two partitions on the same drive in the same RAID is, however, dangerous. If, for example, a RAID 5 array is composed of four drives 250 + 250 + 250 + 500 GB, with the 500-GB drive split into two 250 GB partitions, a failure of this drive will remove two partitions from the array, causing all of the data held on it to be lost. . . Hardware RAID controllers use different, proprietary disk layouts, so it is not usually possible to span controllers " [2]

" So, where s this article s follow-up? The one where real-world testing is done? Where it s compared to a RAID-5 of other drives? This article had all the quality of a HardOCP forum post wherein someone states lol raptors r fast in raid am i rite? lol So, where s this article s follow-up? The one where real-world testing is done? Where it s compared to a RAID-5 of other drives? This article had all the quality of a HardOCP forum post wherein someone states lol raptors r fast in raid am i rite? lol . Rendus, again, this was more of a fun experiment than anything else. We did full VR testing in the original piece that I linked above. We may come back and look at various RAID setups with the VRs but in time. This wasn t meant to say anything is better than anything else, just that here s a taste of what things look like. Obviously it created a bit of buzz so we ll likely come back with more. Be patient though! . I am strongly considering running a raid config on my next pc probably rai" [3]

RAID-5 configuration
" I have installed four hard disks of 146 GB using RAID-5 (auto configuration) on an HP server DL380. On the disk space, it shows a total of only three disks. Is the problem that the other one has been made a spare? Could you please clarify how RAID-5 utilizes the one that is not showing? RAID-5 is a protection scheme where both data and parity information are striped across three or more drives. The parity information, which is used to rebuild data during a single drive failure, is spread across all the drives in the array in a stripe just like the data itself is. The total space consumed by the parity informati" [4]

Virtual Raid 5 internet storage - Hack a Day
" @brk:you first mentioned that RAID-5 ist fault tolerant only n-1. Sure. But you could use it as I figured out in the Picture 3 different and independant Accounts OR MORE!Your objection on the read speed I have also, but my tests speak a other language. It is fast enough for Video Streams (if you have enough bandwidth of course!) ald also for lets say backup some documents. My concept should be for single users and no prof. Workgroups or so ;-)You can get FTP-Space up to some GB for free, VMWare Server is free, NetDrive is for free, FreeNAS is free. Yes, you can also BUY some stuff (I had a cheap PC based NAS " [7]

SmallNetBuilder - Small Network Help - Build a Cheap and Fast RAID 5 NAS
" That's hard to do for a RAID-5 @ 750GB capacity. This article will make it possible...thanks for the effort ! Background: just crashed a 'new' brand name hard drive (installed 30-days only). After looking into the cost for a reliable RAID solution everywhere (RAID5 or better), I landed here. I own a 1.6Ghz bare bones chassis. I purchased the 511 controller, 4-250GB new brand name HD's (warrantied), new IDE and power cables, a new system drive, cooling fans, gigabit LAN card, etc...still under $465 total delivered.
